London vs. Finland

Hi all! I'm about to continue the London information posts and write about the one more thing you were interested about: how's UK compared to Finland.  This is going to be long, but enjoy!

Hei vaan! Tässä nyt vihdoin jatkelen Lontoo info postauksia ja tällä kertaa keskityn taas aiheeseen mistä sain kyselyitä eli millainen Englanti on verrattuna Suomeen? Super pitkä teksti, mutta toivottavasti nautitte! Suomennos englannin jälkeen!

Couple of you asked me to compare the prices between these two places and this is the topic I'm mostly focusing on this time. First I just must say that London is very expencive when you're comparing to other parts of UK, as an exapmle I was living for couple weeks in Sheffield and there living would of been much cheaper (mainly the rent). Also I've heard that in London salaries are worse than on the other areas, this I don't have any own experience as never worked outside of London.

The most expencive part of living in London are the rents, this I did point out before but let me remind you. Monthly price for a room is easily going up to £600 and this means you're sharing a house with other people. Own flat then again will be going high as you can imagine, on zone two and three (where I live)  you might be able to find affordable one bedroom flats. Closer to central you can easily find a flat with £4000 a month (I don't know who got this money?). I never been renting in Finland but what I've heard from my friends the rents are closer to half and even I kow that you can find really nice places under 700€/month, which I'm jealous about. (remember currencies)

So what about food all basic needs. I would say that food is cheaper, but it really matters what you eat. As an example I get all my meat straight from buthcher which is much cheaper than from a super market. (lamb and chicken about £5/kg) Also all fresh food like fruits and vegetables I'm buying from market places, where you get everything about half price. My average food shopping for a week costs me about £20-£30 and this includes my daily Emmi ice latte! Sadly I find the basic food selection here very poor compared to Finland, I'm talking about different flavours for yogurts and other small things like that.

I'm sure you want to know about going out aswell. If you like pubs you can have a very cheap night even in central London. The most important is to follow happy hours and know where to go. With all honesty I'm not too good with this as I never got time, but two places I like are Greenman on Berwick st. (they just have the cheapest drinks) and Strawberry moons near Regent st. (happy hour 5-9, really nice food and good pitchers). Probably the most expensive part of going out in London is the entrance, if you end up going out in places like Leicester Square, you might end up paying £20 just to get in when in Finland the badic is 5€. This problem is solved by going to places outside of central London, and I would say that Camden or Shoreditch are cheaper but average price for a beer starts from £5 even there. But hey, all the ladies remember to use a bit of flirt when talking to promoters in the central, if you good you might get in really cheap, if there's many of you, you might be in for free!

Then the most important: Shopping. I kind of would say that lot's of clothing is a bit cheaper here than in Finland, but this again matters where you go. If you really wanna go cheap you can just head to Primark, but be careful, when the prices are too low you can't expect good quality either. This is again a place where the currency comes up between euro and pound. Some shops do have things cheaper due this, but don't get distracted by the annoying currency. I think here they have more of all these offers and cheaper brands than Finland, but otherwise shopping will end up to cost you the same. In London you just got much more options.

Jokunen teistä pyysi vertaamaan hintatasoja Lontoon ja Suomen välillä, niinpä siis keskityn tähän aiheeseen tällä kertaa. Ihan ensiksi pitää sanoa, että Lontoo on kalliimpi paikka asua kuin muut alueet Englannissa. Olin pari viikkoa Sheffieldissä ja siellä ainakin vuokrat oli puolta halvemmat kuten myös moni muu asia. Olen myös kuullut, että palkat Lontoossa olisi huonommat kuin muualla, mutta tästä mulla ei ole omaa kokemusta.

Kaikkein kallein asia Lontoossa on vuokrat. Kerroinkin tästä jo viime kerralla, mutta muistutetaan vielä. Kuukausi vuokra huoneelle nousee helposti £600 ja tämä siis tarkoittaa, että jaat asunnon useamman ihmisen kanssa. Oman asunnon vuokraaminen taas on ihan eri asia, niissä hinnat voi nousta niin korkealle kun vaan osaat kuvitella. Lontoon keskustassa kämppä voi helposti olla £4000 kuussa (en tiedä kenellä on muka varaa?), mutta onneksi pienen yksiön voi saada zone 2 jälkeen jo mukamas kohtuulliseen hintaan. Vaikka en ole ikinä vuokrannut huoneistoa Suomessa niin tiedän, että hinnat ovat aika reippaasti halvemmat.

Entäs ne perus tarpeet? Väittäisin, että ruoka on täällä vähän halvempaa kuin Suomessa, mutta tämähän johtuu myös siitä mitä syöt. Itse esimerkiksi haen lihat suorasn lihatiskiltä, pienistä liikkeistä missä noin kilo lammasta tai kanaa maksaa vitosen. Hedelmät ja vihannekset pyrin yleensä hakemaan torilta missä kaikki on £1/kg eli helposti puolet supermarkettien hinnasta. Mun ruokaostokset on noin £20-£30 viikossa, ja muista, että tähän sisältyy mun päivittäinen Emmi jäälatte! Ikävä kyllä mun mielestä täällä valikoima on paljon suppeampi, esimerkiksi jogurttien maku vaihtoehtoja ei ole niinkään monta. Onneksi täällä on sentään paremmat valmis salaatit ja kahvilaruuat, täältä saa haplaa ja hyvää sushia mistä vaan!

Luulen, että teitä myös kiinnostaa tietää ulos menemisestä täällä päin. Jos tykkää pubi elämästä niin pääset halvalla jopa Lontoon keskustassa. Tärkeintä on tietää missä on happy hour ja mihin kannattaa mennä milloinkin. Pakko tosin myöntää, että en ole oaras henkilö neuvomaan tällä alueella, sillä mulla on niin harvoin aikaa lähteä tutustumaan uusiin mestoihin. Kaksi suosikki paikkaa mulla kuitenkin on mihin voi mennä viettämään halpaa iltaa: Greenman Berwick streetillä (halvimmat juomat, kaksi bisseä vitosella, jackcoke £4) ja Strawberry moons Regen streetin varrella (happy hour aina 5pm-9pm, hyvä ruoka ja laaja valikoima cocktail pitchereitä). Todennäköisesti kallein osio Lontoossa ulos menemisessä on sisäänpääsy maksut, keskustassa kuten Leicester squarella voi joutua maksaa helposti £20, että pääsee isompiin juhliin mukaan. Tämä ongelma tosin ratkeaa sillä, että lähtee ulos keskustan ulkopuolella. Väittäisin, että Shoreditch ja Camden olisivat havempia alueita ja myös kuuluisia menoistaan, kaikkialla kuitenkin perus oluen hinta on noin £5 ja muut juomat vaihtelee paikan mukaan. Mutta hei kaikki neidot! Muistakaa pistää vähän flirttiä peliin täällä kun keskustelette hinnoista sisäänheittäjien kanssa, jos olet hyvä puhumaan niin pääset helposti puoleen hintaan, jos teitä on useampi niin voitte päästä ilmaiseksi!

Sitten se kaikkein tärkein: shoppailu. Väittäisin, että vaatteet olisi hilkun verran halvempia kuin Suomessa. Tässä tosin sotkee paljon raha kurssit eli ole varovainen! Täällä on tastusti enemmän halpoja vaateliikkeitä, jos oikein vähällä haluaa päästä niin kannattaa suunnata Primarkkiin, mutta muista, että parilla punnalla ei voi olettaa sitä parasta laatua. Pakko myös sanoa, että raha kurssit on hyvä tietää, sillä valillä voi päästä halvemmalla jos on mahdollisuus valita maksaako euroilla vai punnilla, tämä etenking designer liikkeissä. Luulen kuitenkin, että loppu peleissä shoppailu tulee yhtä kalliiksi molemmissa maissa, mutta täällä on vaan enemmän mistä valita ja voi verrata hintoja keskenään eri liikkeissä.
